Explore Zambia’s Safari Regions

Explore the diverse Zambia safari regions, from the Luangwa Valley and Zambezi River to the vast wilderness of Kafue National Park and the open plains of Liuwa Plain.

Each region offers a different safari setting, with opportunities for wildlife viewing, walking safaris, game drives, birding and, in selected areas and depending on conditions, water-based activities. Zambia is also home to Victoria Falls, accessed from Livingstone, while Lusaka provides an important gateway to many of the country’s safari destinations.

South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park is renowned for its walking-safari heritage and wildlife concentrated around the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons. The park supports elephants, buffalo, hippos, lions, leopards, African wild dogs and numerous bird species.

Lower Zambezi National Park

Lower Zambezi National Park lies along the Zambezi River and offers a combination of land-based wildlife viewing and selected water-based safari activities. Depending on the lodge and conditions, experiences may include game drives, walking, canoeing and boating.

Kafue National Park

Kafue National Park is Zambia’s largest national park and encompasses a wide variety of habitats. Its northern Busanga Plains are seasonal floodplains known for their wildlife, while other areas of the park include woodland, wetlands and river systems.

North Luangwa National Park

North Luangwa National Park is a remote wilderness area covering approximately 4,636 km². It supports elephants, buffalo and predators including wild dogs, while a protected population of black rhinoceros is maintained within the Special Protection Zone. Access to this area is restricted as part of its conservation programme.

Liuwa Plain National Park

Liuwa Plain National Park is characterised by extensive grasslands and seasonal wetlands. It is particularly known for its annual blue wildebeest migration, which African Parks identifies as the second-largest wildebeest migration in Africa, with more than 47,000 wildebeest recorded in the wider Liuwa ecosystem. The park also supports zebra, tsessebe, red lechwe and other wildlife.

Victoria Falls & Livingstone

Livingstone provides access to Victoria Falls, where the Zambezi River drops into a series of gorges. The area also offers access to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, a separate protected area with wildlife including white rhinoceros.

Lusaka

Lusaka, Zambia’s capital, is an important transport and travel hub for journeys into the country’s safari regions. Lusaka National Park, located near the capital, provides an additional opportunity for wildlife viewing close to the city.
